Vallorbe sits where the Jura folds up toward the French border, a working town on the young river Orbe with iron in its history and a remarkable cave on its doorstep. The river is the thread through it all: it carved the cave, drove the old forges, and still runs green through the centre of town.

The headline is the Grottes de Vallorbe, a show cave hollowed by the Orbe, with a monumental chamber called “la Cathédrale” nearly 35 metres high, a sound-and-light show, and the Trésor des Fées, a collection of 350 minerals from around the world. In town, the Musée du Fer keeps the old forges and the story of the railway, and above it all rises Mont d’Or.

What to do

  • Explore the Grottes de Vallorbe, lit chambers and an underground river, with “la Cathédrale” and the Trésor des Fées minerals.
  • See the forges at the Musée du Fer, the old ironworks on the Orbe.
  • Walk up toward Mont d’Or for the ridge views; it is one of our flagship Jura hikes.

Practical notes

  • Grottes de Vallorbe: open about 9:30–17:00 (last entry), closed Wednesdays; tickets online, and bring a layer, as it is cool underground. See grottesdevallorbe.ch.
  • Musée du Fer: April to October, Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, adult CHF 13.
  • A half-day covers the cave and the town; a full day if you add the climb.
