Up in the Jura, where the young Orbe disappears underground, the Grottes de Vallorbe are among the most beautiful show caves in Switzerland: a cool, dramatic contrast to a hot day on the lake.
The cave
A lit walkway follows the underground river through chambers hung with stalactites, stalagmites, draperies and fine “fistuleuse” straws, building to the centrepiece, “la Cathédrale,” a single chamber nearly 35 metres high staged with a sound-and-light show. Allow an hour to ninety minutes underground, and bring a layer: the caves stay cool year-round whatever the weather outside.
More than the cave
Two extras earn their time. The Trésor des Fées is a collection of 350 minerals from around the world, set into the rock. And because the steady cool and damp make a perfect cellar, the caves age their own cheese (the “Vallgrotte”), along with wine and spirits, all on sale at the shop.
